From the time you said yes. you knew it was coming. As a Christian, you have long understood the toll of following Christ and the dues you have to pay as a servant. Going out of your comfort zones and being exposed to various sorts of humility-teaching mission trips…going down the ditch just like what the Savior did just to reach the “Christ-less” people… making great sacrifices… and going the extra mile just to realize the “cause” of the name that has been affixed to yours.

Even in the face of all these challenges and trials, you still allowed yourself to be enlisted as a soldier in a spiritual movement. But after some time, you also find yourself mired in the mud of doubt. You start to see the faults of your Christian peers which makes following Jesus more of a “drag.” The people you look up to in the faith, instead of promoting a Christ-likeness in your group, have been behaving unconventionally. Church and ministry pressures have become almost unbearable. To make matters worse, you somehow feel that you are now less appreciated compared to the “favored” new Christian guys. The fire within you starts to fade out. The faithful and enthusiastic “Yes!” had already become a faint “I-can’t-do-it-anymore” retort. Indeed, most Christians experience their fair share of stress and anxiety. Even those looked upon by others as being “strong in the faith” have found their normal routine disturbed by all the troubles of every day life.

A lot of issues confront Christians, especially those who are called to be full-time ministers. Among the stress factors that afflict ministers and church workers include: the difference between expectations and hard reality; the difficulty of being a leader and a servant at the same time; the so-called Peter Principle in which one feels inadequate to lead a group of committed volunteers; the wide scope of responsibilities of a minister or church worker; and the constant pressure of living a “pure” life in front of a congregation.

Stress and anxiety can manifest not only as stressors (overwhelming emotions induced by environmental factors) but can also be seen as internal factors — like the fear of being compared to others, for example. Being accused falsely by someone that you trusted; constant bickering with a fellow believer; conflict and confusion over theological principles and corporate beliefs — all these can lead to stress and anxiety. These distressing predicaments can really put out the fire in a Christian’s life. Psychologists also point out that stress and anxiety can inhibit normal brain activities, which can later lead to faulty decisions.

Compounded by all these problems, many believers feel like being on the verge of quitting. However, in the real sense, the word “quit,” or any word which carry same meaning is not registered in God’s vocabulary. Instead, He wants us to persevere until He comes.

A struggling believer should consider the following suggestions that can help revive a sense of victory in one’s spiritual and daily lives:

            Prepare for stressful situations

As they say, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Even Jesus prepared for his great battle of temptation with a 40-day fasting. So, in this light, we must also follow the Master’s example by being always prepared.

            Relax for a while

Jesus encouraged us to “obey the Sabbath and keep it holy.” The Sabbath also was given so that man can rest from all the hard work. It’s a good regimen for coping with anxiety. Listening to your favorite music and engaging in your hobbies are also effective in dealing with anxiety.

             Practice a Healthy Christian lifestyle

Just like food that is important to the body, prayer and devotion are essential to one’s spiritual nourishment. A car wouldn’t run without fuel. In the same manner, our spiritual life would be in great peril if we do not take time to read God’s word and constantly seek His guidance through prayer.

            Set your priorities

This is not only applicable in the corporate world but also in living the Christian life. The sad part is that many Christians tend become lax about their spiritual life and, in the process, abuse God’s grace. By knowing one’s priorities, a believer’s use of time, energy, and resources would be optimized.

Seek for continuous strength from God

Jesus is the ultimate source of our strength and power. Therefore, we need to constantly attach ourselves to the power source.

The Apostle Paul said, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus — the author and the finisher of our faith.” By removing our focus on the daily problems and struggles that cause us anxiety, we are able to gaze on the Source of Life. Paul also advises all of us to “…press on toward the prize.” Indeed, with prayer and faith, all of us must continue in our journey of faith regardless of the trials that come our way.

Are you special? Are you unlike everybody else? If you want to know if you are truly unique, try answering the following questions.

1. Are the words your child use more advanced than those of other children his age?

2. Does he have the knack for answering logic-related problems with ease?

3. Can he memorize bulks of information just by skimming of a book?

4. In his leisure time, what does he usually do? Play with his toys or read books?

5. Does he easily get bored with the usual things that are being presented to him in school?

6. Does he observe a lot, think a lot, and ask questions more frequently than his playmates?

7. Whenever you limit the topics of his reading materials, does he usually complain about it?

If all of your answers are yes, then you’re rearing a gifted child. This group of children is described to have higher intelligence than their usual age. Medical experts say that the children’s growth are described to be asynchronous – meaning that their mind, body, and emotion don’t develop at the normal rate. Gifted children are identified using a measuring tool that rates the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of a child. The IQ Test classifies children according to their level of giftedness. The classifications are as follows: Bright, having 115 and above IQ average; Moderately gifted, 130 plus; Highly gifted, 145 plus; Exceptionally gifted, 160 plus; and Profoundly gifted 175 plus IQ average.

With their “giftedness,” these exceptional children have a sharp memory, linguistic flair, and high analytical capability. Still, their giftedness does not prevent them from experiencing stress and anxiety that is common in other children. A common dilemma among these children include performance anxiety — an overwhelming apprehension to fail or to perform in public. Their strong fear of not performing according to what is expected of them heightens their emotional scars and thus, causes disruption in their normal health and activities.

Depression, as result of performance anxiety, is also common among gifted children. Studies show that while gifted children continually excel in tests of reasoning, they fare exceptionally low in social and other participative activities in school. This causes them greater stress and anxiety since they are also expected to surpass expectations in terms of their social lives. This factor can intensify their being anxious, thus, affecting their usual activity and performance.

Another problem that may pose as a greater toll on their personal growth and development is perfectionism. Correlated with performance anxiety, gifted children tend to strive for excellence beyond what is usually seen in children of the same age. Parents of gifted children are also responsible for some of the anxieties experienced by these young geniuses.

Stress and anxiety afflicts both the gifted and normal children. Even great geniuses experience their fair share of these emotional and psychological predicaments. Their intellectual superiority does not afford them the privilege of having total emotional stability. So the next time you meet an exceptional child, it may be considerate to know that that child too needs help and comfort just like any other child.

Stress, as commonly by millions of people around the world, is feeling of heaviness and pressure on one’s physical and mental capacities. It is a feeling of being overwhelmed, or of being unsure of how to meet certain standards, and being filled with anxiety. Although a small amount of stress can increase energy and alertness, it can be very bothersome if it is not addressed properly. Being stressed while at work will decrease one’s focus and can reflect on the job itself. Being stressed by other factors including relationships with other people can be seen in a person’s movement, health, and way of thinking.

In dealing with stress, there are a lot of stress techniques, remedies, and tips readily available for all people to use and practice. The best way to fight stress is to remain calm and relaxed. Relaxation is a key component in stress relief. It makes you feel light, allowing a person to experience peace and serenity.

There are various stress techniques that can be applied by people who have high-pressure lives. Stress management techniques should not only cause a person to experience a burst of energy; it should also enhance a person’s performance at work and in other daily activities.

Another factor to consider is one’s environment and the people around you. It is possible to feel stressed when people around you are also stressed, It is important to minimize the level of stress that can come from “toxic” people in your office or even in your own home.

Some people can easily cope with stress. Being around these “stress doctors” can help you feel a sense of calm and control since these people do not get rattled or worried in stressful situations. Maybe this person can help you deal with your own stressful issues.

Another stress technique would be to practice deep and heavy breathing. The body is relaxed by breathing slowly for a count of seven, then breathing out for a count of eleven. Repeat this count until heart rate slows down. Thinking about stressful situations, or having “what if” thoughts could break one’s relaxation and give them stress. Avoid such thoughts and think of what can be to prevent such stress. As they say, prevention is better than cure.

It is also important to know what things cause you stress and anxiety. Knowing what specific things or situations can make you feel stressed will help you avoid these stressors. Lack of sleep, no exercise, and a poor diet can also contribute to stress. Having a healthy regular diet, enough sleep, and regular exercise will also do a lot to fight anxiety.

Stress relief activities such as yoga, meditation, Tai chi, progressive muscle relaxation, massage therapy, and other relaxation exercises can help in relieving stress. Stress can increase heart rate, gives an adrenaline rush through our blood stream, and temporarily shuts down our digestive and immune systems. By doing any of the mentioned exercises, stress relief is surely on its way. Choose a specific stress relief exercise depending on your lifestyle, and with regular application, can surely beat the stress out of your life.

It is hard to make money. It some countries, it is not unusual for people to have second, third, and even fourth jobs. Everywhere we go, we can see that the average paycheck just cannot meet the rise in inflation. It does not matter if your a man or a woman, single or married — one thing is for sure – you’ve got bills to pay. Every month, almost everybody needs to set aside some cash to settle the electricity and water bills, apartment rental, car loan, student loan, cable t.v. bills, telephone bills, school tuition for the kids, the daily parking ticket, groceries, and the list goes on.

No wonder, most are are trying to find new ways of making money. Not just to pay the bills, but so that they can have more money to buy things. Most people think that they are not making enough money to support their family. So after eight or nine hours at the office, they immediately rush to the next job or to a part-time business so that they can make ends meet, and hopefully, earn a few dollars more.

There are also people who still believe and run after the American Dream: a nice home in the suburbs… having two to three children that study in good private schools… a lasting marriage… a wife who does not need to work (but can work if the kids gets older)… a family station wagon for the weekends, and a dog. In their pursuit of the dream, the constant struggle they face is still about making enough money.

Then again, there are individuals who work hard and earn money not just for their own pleasure and satisfaction, but also to compete with their neighbors. “Keeping up with the Joneses” — has become their motto, motivation, and fear, all at the same time. They are always anxious about looking the part, or about fitting in, and of course, in being welcomed within a group that is considered well-off, elite, or privileged. Perhaps more that their desire to have money, they are driven by their need for a high social status.

Status anxiety is the emotional disturbance felt by people who desire to “climb the social ladder” and an exaggerated fear or focus on how they are perceived by others. Status anxiety is the feeling of discontent or insecurity of a person in terms of his or her economic standing or place in the social pecking order.

Climbing up the social ladder can be hard, especially if one cannot climb at all. It is impossible to reach a certain “higher” status without having faults, problems, and what we call “bumps along the roads”. In dealing with status anxiety, it somehow gives an idea of people to “climb” the social ladder and experience the anxieties that come from a focus on how one is perceived by others.

A lot of factors can cause a person to have status anxiety. High expectations, snobbery, lack of self-esteem, and materialism can lead to status anxiety. The ever-increasing demands from the family… having a feeling of always being the “outsider” in an exclusive group… and being looked down upon by others who see themselves as social and economic superiors — these can trigger status anxiety. Being overly dependent on the approval of others is also a cause of anxiety. The lack of self-esteem makes a person depend on others in order to have a sense of approval, worth, and accomplishment.

Coping with anxiety takes having an intimate knowledge of one’s strengths and weaknesses. It is important to know one’s limits in terms of finances and social standing. Coping with anxiety is all about believing in the value of one’s self and the value of others around you — and how every one needs another person to live a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life.

“Wanted: Clear-thinking male. Attractive, successful 35-year-old woman seeks man for good times, days out, nights in, companionship. Must be intelligent and impotent.”

On October 7, 1999 a book (and later, movie) by Gaby Hauptmann entitled “Suche impotenten Mann fürs Leben” (In Search of an Impotent Man) came out with an interesting premise: maybe the perfect man is an impotent man. At least that’s what the protagonist of the novel, Carmen, believes. The sexy, successful thirtysomething real estate maven is tired of being ogled, pawed, and cheated on by the men in her life. By removing the sexual aspect of the relationship, it could leave room for a caring, monogamous relationship. So with the help of her friends Elvira and Laura, Carmen embarks on a crazy quest to find a sensitive, intelligent man with a good sense of humor…but he must be impotent. After posting a personal ad online, Carmen eventually meets the impotent man of her dreams: David, a handsome architect with California surfer-boy looks. But when she finally gets what she thought she wanted, Carmen realizes that she wants to express her love for David in a physical manner. Laura tells Carmen,”You wanted an impotent man, and you’ve got the impotent man of your dreams and now you want to turn him into a potent superman.”

While I wasn’t very impressed with the movie, it did make me think—in real life, how can an impotent man find a partner in the sex-crazed world we live in?

Impotence, or erectile dysfunction, is a condition characterized by the repeated inability to obtain or maintain an erection. Erections are managed by two different mechanisms, the reflex and the psychogenic erection. Reflex erections are achieved by directly touching male shaft. Psychogenic erections are achieved by erotic or emotional stimuli. Erectile dysfunction can be caused by psychological issues, stress, alcohol abuse, smoking, hormonal deficiency, or diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. While there are no formal tests being done to specifically diagnose it, several tests are helpful in determining if there is an underlying medical or psychological condition causing it. When the cause is determined, the proper course of treatment will then be prescribed. Patients will have the option to take either testosterone injections, oral prescriptions, direct injections to the shaft, vacuum pumps, surgery, or in cases of psychological issues, counseling. Apart from those there are other, more unconventional treatments available, like herbal medicine, acupuncture, or experimental medicine. However, since the brain controls the libido, the placebo effect cannot be dismissed as a possible cause for the treatment’s efficacy.

It is unfortunate that men view sex and the ability to obtain an erection as an integral part of their masculinity. Thus, erectile dysfunction will cause the sufferer to feel performance anxiety every time he has sex, and the anxiety will further affect his ability to maintain the erection. Its up to their partners to ensure that their sexual relationship remains mutually satisfying regardless of the condition. One key aspect to this is improving communication between the couple. A spirit of fun and openness will go a long way to ensure that the relationship remains healthy during the toughest times.

It is a known fact that women are more in touch with their feelings rather than men. They are more demonstrative when it comes to expressions of pain, sorrow, and unhappiness. Women are more likely to express their feelings. Unlike women, men are more reserved when it comes to showing emotion and are less communicative. In fact, recent scientific study says that women use 3,000 more words than men on a daily basis.

But having sexual impotence, also known as Erectile Dysfunction or ED, can change all that. With this kind of health problem, men feel that his self esteem and masculinity would be somehow connected to their ability to have an erection.

Sexual impotence is a health condition in which men experience the inability to achieve or maintain an erection during sexual intercourse. It can involve the total incapacity of having an erection or ejaculation, inconsistency, or an inability to sustain an erection.

Physical causes of sexual impotence can range from illnesses such as prostate cancer, Peyronie’s disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, diseases of the nervous system, or others that cause impaired blood flow in the body. These can affect the nerves that are crucial for erection. External conditions like medications, surgery near the penis area, smoking, alcohol abuse, prolonged exercise, illicit drug use, and injuries also contribute to the causes of sexual impotence.

On the other hand, sexual impotence can also be caused by psychological issues. Psychological impotence is apt to develop fast and be connected to a recent event or situation. Some may be able to experience an erection, while others may not. The fact that experiencing and maintaining an erection in the morning when waking up relays the message that the problem is more psychological rather than physical. Psychological impotence usually involves work pressures, fear of aging, financial worries, frustrations with relationships, stress and anxiety, fear of failure, and depression. Sexual impotence can also be the answer to a much deeper emotional trauma, like sexual abuse, for example. There are certain cases in which a man experiences a private episode of sexual impotence. This is more or less due to stress, fatigue, or merely having too much alcohol than a possible physical cause. Nevertheless, a lot of men react to an irregular experience of impotence by being more and more anxious, which answers to further sexual problems, thus having more anxiety. This is what they call the “impotence domino effect” of anxiety; failure leading to more anxiety, leading to even more failure. When a man is impotent in a time of anger or depression, it is as if his body is demanding to face his own feelings.

Psychological impotence should be treated accordingly, depending on what the underlying cause is. Relationship issues require good communication between partners. Impotence can put pressure in a healthy relationship, so it is wise to be open with your partner regarding this condition. Reducing stress, anxiety, and fatigue before any sexual activity is also important. By working together, a couple can have a worry free, stimulating and intimate surrounding for both to enjoy.

Men are more sexual than women in terms of attitude and how they respond to certain sexual ideas. During sexual intercourse, men experience an erection due to the physical and mental stimulation with their partner, which is considered normal and healthy. It is considered easy for them to have an erection if the events taking place is sexually stimulating for them.

Unfortunately for some, they can experience a slight difficulty in having an erection when there is a need to have one. Sexual impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction or ED, is a health condition where in a man is unsuccessful in achieving or maintaining an erection long enough to satisfy his sexual urge. Men with such a condition would experience the consistent inability to have an erection during sexual intercourse, have their erection fail at a crucial point during sex, problems ejaculating, or an occurrence of having very brief erections.

Sexual impotence is one of the most familiar sexual problems and affects almost half of all men over 40 years of age. This can evolve into a more severe condition as men get older. Having less education will increase the impotence of men, since they are likely to have a less healthier diet (drinking more and having no exercise), and having less healthy lifestyle. Also, because of shame and fear of a social stigma, men are less likely to seek medical help for this condition. The condition can be temporary or permanent, but is nonetheless distressing for the sufferer. Impotence can stem from a psychological problem, mainly caused by mere stress or observance of performance anxiety, but certain cases can be attributed to various physical injuries or illnesses.

There are several causes of impotence known today. Some medications can cause erection difficulties as their side effect. Examples include high blood pressure medications, anti-depressants, cancer treatments, diuretics, and epilepsy medications. Always inform your physician if this scenario happens, so that he may give you a different medication. Men who has diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2) are also prone to impotence, since diabetes contributes to the damaging of blood vessels that cause a certain nerve damage called peripheral neuropathy. Other health conditions such as prostate cancer, diseases in the nervous system, and Peyronie’s disease also contributes to reasons for impotence. Having been injured in the spinal cord, sex organ or having a pelvic fracture can also lead to this condition as well. Surgeries done near the nerve pathways of the penis (bladder, rectum, and prostate) can also cause nerve damage to the penis, resulting in erection failure. Smoking, alcohol abuse, illicit drug use, and prolonged exercise are also reasons for impotence, since these factors provide impairment to the nervous systems in various ways.

Psychological reasons of impotence involves stress and anxiety, problems with your relationship, and fear of failure (performance anxiety). By seeking help to control the stress, or by counseling, you can decrease the chances of having impotence. Always inform your physician regarding any symptoms or irregular sexual response, so that proper treatments can be performed.

Music has accompanied almost every human activity from grand celebrations to the most melancholic moments. The notes and rhymes composed by prolific musicians have become the “soundtrack of our lives.” From the romantic garden weddings highlighted by sounds from a string quartet, to the sensual noises that fill every Mardi Gras, to the feel-good melodies of Disney parades — music has always played a central role.

The importance of music was immortalized by Rogers and Hammerstein in the movie musical, Sound of Music. The movie tells the story about the stress and anxiety experienced by the Von Trapp children who lost their mother, Agathe Whitehead Von Trapp. Her death brought unbearable grief and sorrow to the family, especially to Captain Georg Ritter Von Trapp. In his own grief, Captain Von Trapp forbid his children from singing, playing and doing other things that would somehow show a certain degree of happiness. Like sailors in a ship, Captain Von Trapp ruled his children and demanded discipline at all times.

But all of that was about to change upon the arrival of Maria Kutschera, an aspiring nun who was sent by her superiors to the Von Trapp residence to serve as a governess. Despite her very positive and adventurous personality, Maria, too, felt the stress and anxiety of helping raise the Von Trapp children under the watchful eye of the captain.

Slowly, using music as a tool, Maria was able to win the love and respect of the Von Trapp children. Through music, she was able to share a part of herself to her ward. The stress and anxiety of living in the middle of a war was made bearable due to Maria’s music which served as a melodic form of anxiety relief. Still, the pressures of living in a Nazi-controlled country provided little room for enjoyment. Each day brought them closer to stricter military control, making even music a subject of close Nazi scrutiny.

Stress and anxiety, almost always, hovered over Captain Von Trapp’s day. As a Navy officer, he was caught between the duty to serve as part of the Nazi war machine and the need to be a father to his children. To make up for the loss of his wife, he allowed himself to consider remarriage to a woman who was seen by the Von Trapp children as the farthest thing from being a replacement to their mother.

In the latter part of the movie, an unexpected romance blossomed between Maria and Captain Von Trapp. Through her winsome personality, she was able to convince the Captain about the need to let the children have fun and enjoy themselves. Maria was able to show the Captain that the time to grieve had already passed and that it is possible for the Von Trapp family to “sing a new song.”

In a dramatic escape, the Von Trapp family used a singing event to plan and execute their escape from the Nazis. They literally sang their way to freedom from stress, anxiety, and all the things that held them back from becoming a happy family.

Many church-going teenagers and young adults share a common predicament: the difficulty of sharing their faith. Most of these budding evangelists and missionaries say that they have a “fire within” that could not be contained. Yet, at the same time, they find themselves weighed down by self-doubt and apprehensions. While their faith pushes them to open up and reach out to other people to share their beliefs, these young “sharers of the Word” become discouraged buy their own lack of confidence in their abilities or “gifts.” Being unsure of whether they are fit to do the task, they shy away and tell themselves that they are simply incapable of the enormous responsibility given by their church.

You now have come face-to-face with the realities of spiritual conviction. Your body suffers from nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, and chest pain — all of which are signals that something is not right in terms of your physical and emotional health. Dizziness, lack of appetite, restlessness — these are only some of the distressful manifestations or anxiety symptoms felt by young missionaries and aspiring men and women of the cloth.

Medical studies describe anxiety attacks as psychological responses to stress which can vary from person to person. These overwhelming emotions of fear, worry and apprehension can really affect the normal activities of soldiers – Christian soldiers, that is. Even with all their courage and bravado, they still see find it hard to cope with their anxiety attacks. Without exception, new Christians experience a roller coaster of emotions as they follow the Great Commission.

As new believers without experience in the “battlefield of faith”, the temptation to flee from the very source of their anxiety becomes a daily struggle. Instead of proclaiming their faith the way they were trained in summer camp or in the seminary, many young missionaries backtrack and postpone their task to share their faith with other people. Psychiatrists call this the “fight or flight” syndrome.

Sharing one’s faith is always an arduous task, especially for the first timer. Even the ancient scriptures tells the story of how the prophet Abraham, the great patriarch of faith also faced anxiety. Abram, later renamed as Abraham, was a rich merchant in Ur (which is in present-day Iraq) who had all the luxuries of life. But one day, God spoke to him and gave him the command to travel to a foreign land.

Abraham, like any other mortal being, experienced anxiety and stress as he tried to obey God.

However, despite the anxiety symptoms he had to face everyday, he still followed God and took his “journey of faith.” Later, he became the “Father of all Nations” and started a new nation that eventually occupied the land of Canaan. That nation was Israel. The lesson behind the remarkable life of Abraham is that one is truly capable of defeating anxiety and the overwhelming sense of duty if his life is dedicated in service to a Higher Power. That very same Higher Power would help even the most timid of men to become brave and secure in the promises given them by the Supreme Being.

While it is true that not everybody can attain the same spiritual heights and physical longevity that was achieved by Abraham. But all can learn from how the man called “The Friend of God” was able to overcome stress and anxiety. His faith was tested in the fire. As a result, his convictions grew stronger, his faith was refined, and his life was totally renewed. By accepting challenges and the anxieties that naturally come as part of life, a person can exercise his faith and find a more blessed future with God.
